Email is a very important part of business relations, more than anyone ever predicted, but as such most email systems dont really allow for email to be 'safe' from harm.
There are 2 mail types of email service used widely;
POP and IMAP;
POP is Point of Presence
IMAP is Internet Mail Access Protocol
What does this mean to you? probably not much!
POP is a very old way of checking email, it was wide spread for use on modems, but not so used these days where you may have 5, 10 or hundreds of users on the 1 connection. The aging POP standard causes more traffic than required and will slow down the internet with the more users on the service.
IMAP is a very effecient protocol, as it only sends when there is an email to send. IMAP connects to the server and stays connected, it then syncronizes with the server/client to ensure the client is up to date. If a new mail comes in during the conenction it's imidately sent to the end user, meaning no delay and no connect, sync, disconnect process - making it much more efficient and faster.
Dont underestimate email, or perhaps more accurately, dont under estimate how much it costs you and how important email can be (or how much it can hurt if handled badly.)
